These past few weeks have been an exciting time for me with a panel presentation at the Ohioana Book Festival and a workshop on revision at Columbus’ Thurber House with Christiane Buuck. Summer beacons, and I’m looking forward to some down-time where I can catch up on the BBC’s Killing Eve along with all the other mystery/thriller series I’ve missed. And, of course, some stretches of time to write. I’ve recently received great news on two of my short stories—stories that couldn’t be more different.

My short horror story “Plastic Surgery, West Texas Style” has been selected and printed in the anthology Morpheus Tales: The Best Weird Fiction Volume 7! It’s a great collection of weird and horror-filled stories from writers like Philip Roberts, Brent Pilkey, C. E. Zacherl, Todd Outcalt, Jessica Lilien, Clay Waters, Tyler Bowler, Jude-Marie Green, Paul Michael Moreau, Tim Foley, and many more.

I wrote this strange little story after I had just moved away from West Texas and was suffering from a sort of homesickness for its open-wide land. People in West Texas talk about how the land can get ahold of you, how it can call to you, and bring you back to it years after you’ve left it behind. And I believe them—ten years later, I still occasionally dream of the cracked red earth, the wide open blue sky that goes on for eternity, and the dirt particles that collected in my windowsills.

“Plastic Surgery, West Texas Style” begins:

Most people say there’s nothing much out here in the rurals of West Texas. But what part of West Texas isn’t rural? If it weren’t for the pumping oil horses, vintage trucks, and the long stretches of flat highway that goes on and on for days, we’d only be known for our dust and wind—both of which we have entirely too much of. I’ve been living out on this flatness forever…

As some of you know, I write short stories in lesbian romance and erotica under the pen name Rion Woolf (check out Rion’s Facebook author page).

My latest short erotica piece, “Let Go,” has been accepted into the upcoming lesbian erotica collection Escape to Pleasure edited by Sandra Lowe and published by Bold Strokes Books. I’m really looking forward to holding this hot little collection in my hands!

“Let Go” was inspired by my love of camping and memories of an amazing white-water rafting trip in the beautiful New River Gorge National Park located in West Virginia. It’s been quite a few years since I took this trip down the New River Gorge National River, and I’ve never forgotten it.

In this story, Lucy joins her friends for a lesbian getaway weekend at the New River Gorge National Park. She’s been working too many hours as an emergency room doctor, drowning herself in her job to get over a bad breakup. The last thing on Lucy’s mind is meeting a hot national park ranger who has the hills, valleys, and gorges of the park tattooed inside her heart.

On the last evening of the trip, Lucy takes Skylar up on an offer for an evening hike and picnic overlooking the river. What Lucy doesn’t know is that Skylar has quite a surprise lined up for her, one that promises to take her breath away again and again.

Watch for the upcoming release of Escape to Pleasure at the Bold Strokes Books Bookstore!
